This young man – Leaky – was one of the helpers on a wonderful boat trip with Caicos Dream Tours from Grace Bay Beach to Half Moon Bay in Turks and Caicos. When we got near Half Moon Bay Leaky started to dive for conch shells to give to the people on the boat. It wasn’t as if the conchs were everywhere – he dove and dove to find them. We are only used to seeing young men exert that much effort to find women with silicone breasts or motorcycles so were amazed at Leaky’s diligence.
Blonde and Brunette kept telling him he didn’t need to get any for us. We figured we didn’t have a way to pack them in our luggage safely and didn’t know what we would do with them anyway. But Leaky managed to get us two despite our protestations and of course we brought them home. When we don’t lie about having retrieved them ourselves we think about Leaky retrieving the shells for us when we look at them.
The day we landed in Melbourne after flying there all the way from the east coast of the U.S. we were jet-lagged and unambitious. (Jet lag being the only part of that that is different than usual.) So we went out bumbling around near our hotel and came across the Melbourne Comedy Festival. On that day some of the participants were performing outside near Flinders Street Station.
We looked on in amazement at this particular performer’s interpretation of the Toreador – and his song – from Carmen’s Bizet. Generally a role for a beefy opera singer attempting to exude machismo this was….. well, different. This chap cavorted about to the music and at one point even – no nicer way to say this – simulated humping and then conquering a red wheelbarrow. (Definitely in the “you had to be there” category.)
As much as his look and performance amused us we also learned on Day One in Australia that they may see suitable family entertainment differently than the fun-loving American Tea Party! The viewing area was crammed with families with small children learning Bizet in a more memorable fashion than if they had seen the opera. A few parents did scurry hurriedly off with the kiddies during the humping scene but probably more out of concern that now their kids would want red wheelbarrows.
